Australia’s Favourite Foods

Just like any country, Australia has its share of foods that are well-loved by all and served just about anywhere. While some may be familiar to people from other lands, others are absolutely unique to the land down under and can only be found there!

If you are a foodie who is interested in learning more about what’s on the plate in Australia, you can start by picking up a copy of Delicious Magazine, a great publication that focuses on the best of the nation’s varied cuisine. Now that we have whetted your appetite, here are some of the foods that Aussies just can’t get enough of- your mileage may vary!

Fairy Bread – Every Australian child grows up looking forward to fairy bread on their birthdays, and why stop when you are all grown up? Sometimes called Australia’s favourite food (I bet you thought it was Vegemite- close, it comes in at second place) fairy bread consists of plain white bread spread with butter, then covered in thousands of tiny rainbow sprinkles! Maybe it’s just a sentimental childhood thing, but we have caught plenty of adults sneaking in a round of this admittedly odd, but amazingly satisfying combination! More sprinkles?

Vegemite – This one’s a bit strange, but millions of Australians claim it’s the greatest thing ever, and they can’t be wrong, can they? Can they? Well, what exactly is this so-called heavenly concoction, anyway? Vegemite is a dark brown paste made from various vegetables, yeast extract and spice additives. It is more savoury than sweet and can be spread on just about anything, much to the Aussie’s delight, but toast is the perennial favourite. Non-Australians are mostly not convinced, and of all the adventurous visitors who have tried Vegemite very few come round for another go at it.

Meat Pies – It’s pretty simple, instead of stuffing a pie crust with sweet fruits, fill it with minced beef, mushrooms, onions, and cheese in a savoury brown gravy. Meat pies can be enjoyed any time of day, drop an egg on top for breakfast, and for dinner have it with an ice-cold glass of beer. Oh, and if you really want to go native, just dab some of that Vegemite on it, eh cobber?

Vanilla Slice – Often touted as Australia’s most popular dessert, this decadent combination of flaky pastry, and velvety custard filling, all topped with a glossy layer of smooth vanilla icing, is the stuff that a sweet tooth’s dreams are made of!

Smashed Avo – The whole avocado on toast craze started down under, and its popularity is showing no signs of fading. One of the country’s best-loved breakfasts, it’s guaranteed to get you through to at least a late lunch, maybe even supper! A lovely piece of crusty rustic bread is the foundation for a big green avocado smashed into a lumpy paste, then a generous sprinkling of feta cheese crumbles, black pepper, sesame seeds. Place a couple of poached eggs on top for good measure, then drizzle on some olive oil. Simply scrumptious!

There are many more culinary delights to be had in Australia, come down under and load up a plate!
